All about me…and Liverpool and F1 too…

Monday, August 24th, 2009

Having survived my 1st week at work, I am glad that the 2nd week started out much better. I can feel my wound recovering well and guess in a couple more weeks (or slightly more), I shall be raring to go. Hoping to be able to participate in the Run NUS 2009 this Sun after missing the SAFRA Bay Run as there is no way I can run in my condition.

The BPL season has started once again and I have to endure the scorns of manu and chelski fans after Liverpool started the season with a defeat while the rest of the big 5 win. But the mid-week game means Liverpool is able to go back on track with a 4-0 win over Stoke, especially after 2 nil-nil draws last season. And with the news that manu lost to newly promoted Burnley, it was simply a great feeling. Obviously been manu u don’t expect them to lost 2 games in the row so it was expected that they walk over Wigan over the weekend. Chelski, Arsernal, Spurs and Man City all had a great start to the season, but as we all know, the season only ends in May 2010, not next week. So it is going to be a long season. It remains to be seen who will remain at the top come Christmas.

The last weekend is also the return of F1 after a long break. McLaren seems to have got their package correct when they qualify 1-2 for the 1st time this season, but a pit lane screw up, and a lack of speed (vs the Brawn anyway) see them finishing 2nd and 4th instead. Kimi started from 6th and finished among the podium for another great race following his Hungarian 2nd place finish. Ferrari’s temp replacement for Massa (I didn’t even want to mention his name) had a mess of a race and if I (and millions other Ferrari fan I’m sure) have a choice, I wish he don’t start at Belgian. He was so bad that the reason he finish the race is because he is too careful. And the reason he manage to be better than Nakajima is because he has to drive an entire lap with 3 tires after one burst just after he passed the pit entry. His day of misery is compounded when he gave up his position while coming out of the pitlane. I have never seen someone race so bad before. I sure don’t hope seeing his in Singapore. Really wish Massa will recover for the Singapore leg.

With the Singapore races coming up in slightly over a month, I am beginning to feel excited. Having met up with some old friends, and new ones, recently for our sector briefing, it was just great to be talking F1. Next up is to look forward to the training when I really hope I can be up to mark as a recovery specialist. Wish me all the best!

Me, Liverpool and F1….

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

I lived another day! Haha…lots of things happened today, and it’s barely 3pm.

I woke up feeling the best day of my last 9-10 days and thought my recovery is near to completion. So I decided to venture to the mini-mart across the road for my furthest venture yet. Half way through, I started to regret. The pain is back but I persisted on as I was determined to buy somethings over there. Having again overestimated myself, I bought quite a bit of stuff and while walking back, the pain got worst, as I guess the weight I was carrying play a part. Stupid old me, I should have just rested. But I guess I was getting impatient.

Back home, I was reading the latest Liverpool news. Yes, Alonso leaving is old news. Nevermind he was an unknowned when Rafa picked him out in 2004. Nevermind he won his first major trophy with Liverpool. Nevermind he was a regular in the Spain squad since joining Liverpool. Nevermind the fans adore him and pleaded for him to stay. His mind was already made up…in May!!! Right after the season ended he has already made up his mind to turn his back on Liverpool. Goodbye Alonso, and I am still glad for the good years you brought along to Liverpool. Now I hope you don’t do so well in Real Madrid…oops…did I say that out loud? I mean I still hope you do well, just not so well.

The news of the day is Rafa has already lined up a replacement. Hours after Alonso flies into Madrid to complete his medical, Liverpool has agreed a deal with Roma for 25 years old Italian international Alberto Aquilani, presumably for less than 2/3 of the fees they received from the Alonso deal (which is rumors to be somewhere between £28-30mil with additionals). While many don’t, I do put my faith in Rafa. Look at the players he has brought in, besides Alonso, he has brought in players like Torres, Mascherano, Benayoun, Riera, Aurelio, Reina, Skrtel, etc…the list gones on. Many of this players had many critics wondering, but they turn out to be great players. I know, there are some not so good buys, which he quickly shipped out, and some who are still developing, which I see potential. There are those that I do not agree, but generally, I am impressed with his buys so far.

The only problem is whether Aquilani can pass a stringent medical due to his injury problem, and if he can bed into the sqaud as quickly as Torres did. Sad to say Italians don’t travel that well, and I hope he is one of the exceptions. If he does, from what I read, he will be a great link up player in the middle of the park, and youngest and fastest too (compared with Alonso). Italian football are very technical, which is what is needed as a midfield linkup man, so I am keeping my finger crossed.

Another big news today is that the role allocation for the F1 Singapore Grand Prix 2009 is out! I will be a Recovery Specialist this year and boy oh boy it’s going to be fun! I will be at Turn 8 this year (vs Turn 18 last), and from what I know, it is one of the high risk corner identified. With Michael Schumacher back (hopefully for the Singapore leg too), and the championship race hotting up (vs the early gloom that it’s going to be a 1 team championship year), and McLaren and Ferrari improving their cars by leaps and bounds, it promises to be a good year. And guess what, we get to go to Pasir Gudang for a day of training too! How cool is that!?! Heehee…now all I need is to make sure I recover quickly, so that I will not miss out on the trainings coming up.

The race is on!

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

1 month ago, there is only going to be 1 winner in the Barclays Premier League. Man Utd has not been beaten since Nov 08, Van der Sar just broken the clean sheet records, Man Utd has most of their injured back, and they have a very healthy lead at the top of the BPL which we all know at this stage, they rarely gave away.

Liverpool can only hope, and I believe even the most faithful of Liverpool fans wasn’t thinking too much of the title this season. The only way to have any real chance, abet a very very slim one, is the meeting with Man Utd, a chance to gain 3 vital points. And on a back of a superb win over Real Madrid, they repeated the feat against Man Utd. Hopes were raise, just a little, as Man Utd still have a 4 points lead, and a game in hand.

Next up for Man Utd is Fulham, a chance to restore lost pride, a chance for back slash, especially when they just murdered Fulham 4-0 at the same ground 2 weeks ago. A chance to silence any doubts anyone have against them retaining the crowd. Liverpool’s match is just a blip, now for the real masterclass. Well, it didn’t go quite as plan.

Having lost Vidjic due to suspension (for stupidly hurling down Gerrard when he has absolutely no chance), the young and promising Evans came in. But no one expected Fulham to start the way they started. They controlled the 1st half, played probably their best football, scored from the penalty spot (for a ex-Liverpoolian Murphy), and have Man Utd’s Scholes sent off in the process for deliberate handball.

Even with 10 man, Man Utd is expected to steamroll over Fulham. They unlease Rooney in the 2nd half, and control the game for a good 20 mins or so, but found the Fulham keeper in top form with saves, double saves, and more. Then on came Tevez, more terror fo Fulham, but they started to take back some control of the game and score a 2nd late on to kill off the match. They was still time for Rooney to be sent off (a bit harsh I thought, but who cares!).

So now it is back to back lost for Man Utd, a first in 147 games! With Chelsea losing to Spurs half hour later, Merseyside is sensing something. A chance to close the gap to 1 point, or will they choke?

Against Villa who is fighting for a Champions League spot, it is not going to be easy, and it will take the bravest to predict the margin of victory they will to have. Right from the start, Liverpool was at their throat, and reward early with a Kuyt goal. Villa tried to come back, and need Reina to be at his best. But a brilliant kick by Reina found Reira free and a first time volley almost broke the crossbar on the way in. 2 -0, and Liverpool is still not done. Any great ball releases Reira and Reo-cooker, played out of position, tripped in and it’s Gerrard time. 3-0 and it’s over, with lots of time still left to play.

An Istanbul fightback of their own from Villa? Not quite as just 5 mins into the 2nd half, a well placed Gerrard free kick puts them 4-0 up. Another 4 goals scored, another victory in the bag. When Torres runs free into the box, Villa feel the worst, but it was worst then worst. The Villa keeper came out, got nothing of the ball, and was sent off for bring Torres down. Gerrard dispatch the penalty in typically cool fashion for his 1st Premier League hat-trick and Liverpool fans will be celebrating well into the night for another excellent victory.

Man Utd, keep looking over your shoulder, you might not see us soon.

What a week for Liverpool!

Sunday, March 15th, 2009

Wow…what a week it has been for Liverpool. Even the most fervent fan would not think that they will ship 8 goals pass Real Madrid and Man Utd in one week. And boy did they did it so convincingly.

If anyone thought Liverpool will be doing another ‘Boro’ on a back of a Champions League win over one of the best team in the world, they were totally wrong. Liverpool put up another excellent display, and even allow Man Utd to score first, before trashing them 4-1. A trashing, if you look at Man Utd’s record, and you would agree this is consider a trashing.

Now the game is on, even though Man Utd is still the favourite to retain the Premier League title, it will make for a more interesting run-in. And how many teams can claim they do a double over the champions? Kudos to Liverpool, especially Torres and Gerrard! And not forgetting good old Rafa who did it again!

Woeful Liverpool, really

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

Liverpool has had a couple of bad games, or rather bad halves this season but none is close to the type of school boy football they played this morning against Tottenham in the League Cup. Yes, you know I have been a staunch supporter of Liverpool and don’t usually criticized them but the kind of football they played this morning is simply, using a Singapore slang, cannot make it ah.

Granted that perhaps 10 out of 11 might not have started a ‘proper’ league game if the whole squad is fit, and the no. 11th player just came back from missing 9 matches due to injury, I still expect the 2nd strings to put in a stronger performance. Misplaced passes, bad first touches, not much movement off the ball, non marking of players in defence, lack of communication, etc…everything you should not have done in a top class football match, they have done it. I’m sure this match will be taped and watched over and over again to show future generations of Liverpool players what they SHOULD NOT have done in a football match.

OK, let’s not take it away from Spurs, they did ring a few changes, keeping in-form Bent on the bench, and played extremely well, especially going forward. I was particularly impressed with Lennon on the right flank, and his willingness to track back and Campbell showed his desire to chase after every seemingly lost cause. BUT, Liverpool made their life much much easier and allow them to dictate the pace of the game.

This match further highlight the kind of work Rafa need to do to ensure the 2nd string of players are up to mark when called upon for 1st team actions. The good news is that we are not likely to see the same team play together again this season. I’m sure every Liverpool fans expect a player who puts on a Liverpool shirt in a football match to live up to the high expectation of him being a Liverpool player, and some of them really need to do some serious soul searching. I expect ruthless Rafa to ship some of them out at the end of the season.

Ngog was non existence up front, simply ball passed to him he couldn’t control it, never had a good first touch in the entire match, and misses most of his passes. Plessis, apart from his goal and his yellow card, did nothing to suggest he could anchor the midfield one day. Lucas was woeful in his passes, even simple ones. Degan seems to be always day dreaming. Agger is simply too casual (no wonder he is displaced by Sketel). El Zhar seems to have lost his directions, but at least he tries to play football. Cavalieri just needs to communicate more with his defenders but did an ok job apart from the mixed up that lead to the goal. Hyypia, despite doing very well, have to take some blame for not organising the defence well enough. Dossena tried but could have done much better. Babel was the only bright spark but held on to the ball too much at times (many times), perhaps knowing that if he passes it the others might lose it anyway. Torres just got back from injury so I am not expecting much from him. Insua and Alonso came on as a sub and spark the mini revivial till Gomes injury (a serious one) kill off any momentem Liverpool was trying to build.

If I ever see a similar line up again I will just switch off my TV set, and you know that I watch every single Liverpool match every season. Rafa was right in allowing the 2nd string to have a go, but they simply did not repay the faith. Players I want to see go? Ngog and Plessis definately, the rest I will give them a 2nd chance, but not playing together.

Why are we paying more for Starhub Sports and getting lousy service?

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

When Starhub won the bid to the BPL TV rights, I already sense trouble. Now into their 2nd season, things have not improved. Break in transmission, mediocre pre and post match program, no pre and post match program on other channels showing ‘live’ game, matches not shown, etc…

The biggest problem is perhaps the break in transmission that is happening ever so often. In their 1st season, I can accept that they are still in their learning phase, but now in the 2nd season, things are still happening. Just this morning during the Arsenal-Spurs match, with about 5 mins to go and the match entering an important phase as Arsenal was leading 4-2 but Spurs hoping to do a come back, the transmission got lose for 4 whole mins! And during this time we miss a goal from Spurs that set up an exciting finale which they eventually managed to equalise deep in injury time. Imagine if the transmission did not come back in time.

While I am neither a gunners or spurs fan, I can imgine their frustration as this has happened during Liverpool matches before. The worst so far on this break in transmission is 1 whole half of the match missing. They blame it on the satallite feed they got and claim there is nothing they can do about it, but I have NEVER seen this happening in my many many years watching on ESPN. Perhaps they need to think about backup plan.

Another thing that frustrate me is that there are 9 matches played today, yet only 2 matches are shown ‘live’ with NONE, yes NONE shown ‘delayed’. They have at least 3 channels capable of showing matches but why only 2 matches? They promise to show 370 matches in a season (‘live’ or delayed) out of the 380 (see Starhub Press Release) and we are barely into the season and already 7 games are not shown in 1 single day, and I do recall a couple of weeks back where they are some matches not shown. So what happen to the justification of the price increase that we will be seeing more games?

And the SportsHD channel is a big joke, with almost nothing shown on it for the entire week except the occasional matches (up to 2 a week they promise – see Starhub Press Release). Why have a channel and only show 2 program a week??? I cannot understand the logic, is it a case of Starhub running out of contents? Might as well mix it with one of the other HD channels, which are showing nothing but repeats. We do not want to have lots of channels to choose, we want channels with good contents to view.

With Champions/UEFA league out of Starhub’s radar next season, I am beginning to wonder if I should continue to pay $25 a month for the sports channel. The worst is yet to come as once the TV rights expire next year, rather the 2009-2010 season, expect a bidding war from SingTel for the season starting 2010. If Starhub loses it, they can kiss their sports channel goodbye, if they win it, we can kiss our wallet goodbye. Either way, we lose. With the economic crisis looming, can’t they do one thing? Collaboration instead of cutting each other throat. Then again, it’s a war out there and nobody wants to lose.
