Starting 2010 Afresh

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

What a wonderful place! Thank God for His wonderful creation. I needed some time alone with God with no distraction so that I can re-commit my life to Him afresh in this new year. Sitting admist this serene environment, one can’t help but be amazed by why God can do.

This morning, I did what I had not done for a longest time, spending 2 distracted hours with God. Here you can scream, shout, sing, pray, and even a little dance with not much distraction. And I think it is time for me to start 2010 on a right note.

Seated beside this tree, I re-committed my life to God in a fresh way. Giving up myself as I am simply nothing. Nothing I did or do are right, and I need His touch, His wisdom, His help. Here I realise that I am further away from God than I could admit, and how it must have broken His heart. Sorry Lord, for the tears you must have shed for me. And here I realise that I need to have an even tighter grib on a hand and never let it go. I will not give up, and with God’s grace, I will be able to see through this situation and may God be the Glory.

Thanks be to God, who always leads us to triumph.

Carry on writing…

Monday, January 25th, 2010

I almost wanted to give up writing, but having an iPhone is just wonderful. Having found a Wordpress app that works with self-hosted wordpress, I think it will make it easier for me to blog again, like what it did to make me twit and Facebook more often with their respective apps. So here I am, with my Starhub powered iPhone, writing my first post for 2010.

All about me…and Liverpool and F1 too…

Monday, August 24th, 2009

Having survived my 1st week at work, I am glad that the 2nd week started out much better. I can feel my wound recovering well and guess in a couple more weeks (or slightly more), I shall be raring to go. Hoping to be able to participate in the Run NUS 2009 this Sun after missing the SAFRA Bay Run as there is no way I can run in my condition.

The BPL season has started once again and I have to endure the scorns of manu and chelski fans after Liverpool started the season with a defeat while the rest of the big 5 win. But the mid-week game means Liverpool is able to go back on track with a 4-0 win over Stoke, especially after 2 nil-nil draws last season. And with the news that manu lost to newly promoted Burnley, it was simply a great feeling. Obviously been manu u don’t expect them to lost 2 games in the row so it was expected that they walk over Wigan over the weekend. Chelski, Arsernal, Spurs and Man City all had a great start to the season, but as we all know, the season only ends in May 2010, not next week. So it is going to be a long season. It remains to be seen who will remain at the top come Christmas.

The last weekend is also the return of F1 after a long break. McLaren seems to have got their package correct when they qualify 1-2 for the 1st time this season, but a pit lane screw up, and a lack of speed (vs the Brawn anyway) see them finishing 2nd and 4th instead. Kimi started from 6th and finished among the podium for another great race following his Hungarian 2nd place finish. Ferrari’s temp replacement for Massa (I didn’t even want to mention his name) had a mess of a race and if I (and millions other Ferrari fan I’m sure) have a choice, I wish he don’t start at Belgian. He was so bad that the reason he finish the race is because he is too careful. And the reason he manage to be better than Nakajima is because he has to drive an entire lap with 3 tires after one burst just after he passed the pit entry. His day of misery is compounded when he gave up his position while coming out of the pitlane. I have never seen someone race so bad before. I sure don’t hope seeing his in Singapore. Really wish Massa will recover for the Singapore leg.

With the Singapore races coming up in slightly over a month, I am beginning to feel excited. Having met up with some old friends, and new ones, recently for our sector briefing, it was just great to be talking F1. Next up is to look forward to the training when I really hope I can be up to mark as a recovery specialist. Wish me all the best!

Poor old me…

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

I went for my medical follow up appointment yesterday, in my 1st venture out since 2 weeks ago. The trip never felt so long. Doc says my wound is healing well and will need at least 6 more weeks to be totally healed. Gosh, I thought he was kidding but he was not. So it will be a tall order when I go back to work to live through the pain for the entire day. After collecting my medication (which I have to ask for it), I headed home and on the way, I started to feel tired and giddy. Guess the long distance and all the waiting had taken a toll on me. When I reach home, I hit the sack for the next couple of hours till my wife woke me up for dinner.

This morning, I slept till 9am even though I sleep at 9+ pm yesterday! Considering that for the last 2 weeks I woke up at 5+ am and couldn’t get back to sleep anymore, even on nights where I sleeps way way pass midnight. Can’t believe I’m so weak just because of 1 trip out. Wonder what will happen if I need to be out the entire day. Guess I have to find a way to ease myself back to work.

Me, Liverpool and F1….

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

I lived another day! Haha…lots of things happened today, and it’s barely 3pm.

I woke up feeling the best day of my last 9-10 days and thought my recovery is near to completion. So I decided to venture to the mini-mart across the road for my furthest venture yet. Half way through, I started to regret. The pain is back but I persisted on as I was determined to buy somethings over there. Having again overestimated myself, I bought quite a bit of stuff and while walking back, the pain got worst, as I guess the weight I was carrying play a part. Stupid old me, I should have just rested. But I guess I was getting impatient.

Back home, I was reading the latest Liverpool news. Yes, Alonso leaving is old news. Nevermind he was an unknowned when Rafa picked him out in 2004. Nevermind he won his first major trophy with Liverpool. Nevermind he was a regular in the Spain squad since joining Liverpool. Nevermind the fans adore him and pleaded for him to stay. His mind was already made up…in May!!! Right after the season ended he has already made up his mind to turn his back on Liverpool. Goodbye Alonso, and I am still glad for the good years you brought along to Liverpool. Now I hope you don’t do so well in Real Madrid…oops…did I say that out loud? I mean I still hope you do well, just not so well.

The news of the day is Rafa has already lined up a replacement. Hours after Alonso flies into Madrid to complete his medical, Liverpool has agreed a deal with Roma for 25 years old Italian international Alberto Aquilani, presumably for less than 2/3 of the fees they received from the Alonso deal (which is rumors to be somewhere between £28-30mil with additionals). While many don’t, I do put my faith in Rafa. Look at the players he has brought in, besides Alonso, he has brought in players like Torres, Mascherano, Benayoun, Riera, Aurelio, Reina, Skrtel, etc…the list gones on. Many of this players had many critics wondering, but they turn out to be great players. I know, there are some not so good buys, which he quickly shipped out, and some who are still developing, which I see potential. There are those that I do not agree, but generally, I am impressed with his buys so far.

The only problem is whether Aquilani can pass a stringent medical due to his injury problem, and if he can bed into the sqaud as quickly as Torres did. Sad to say Italians don’t travel that well, and I hope he is one of the exceptions. If he does, from what I read, he will be a great link up player in the middle of the park, and youngest and fastest too (compared with Alonso). Italian football are very technical, which is what is needed as a midfield linkup man, so I am keeping my finger crossed.

Another big news today is that the role allocation for the F1 Singapore Grand Prix 2009 is out! I will be a Recovery Specialist this year and boy oh boy it’s going to be fun! I will be at Turn 8 this year (vs Turn 18 last), and from what I know, it is one of the high risk corner identified. With Michael Schumacher back (hopefully for the Singapore leg too), and the championship race hotting up (vs the early gloom that it’s going to be a 1 team championship year), and McLaren and Ferrari improving their cars by leaps and bounds, it promises to be a good year. And guess what, we get to go to Pasir Gudang for a day of training too! How cool is that!?! Heehee…now all I need is to make sure I recover quickly, so that I will not miss out on the trainings coming up.

Life at home…and been emotionally blackmailed…

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

Wow…it has been so long since I last post that I almost have problem logging in. With me now stuck at home, I finally decided to login and post some updates. It could be a long one…or I may just forget those that are too long ago and post just the latest updated.

Why am I stuck at home? Some may ask, it is because I have to go for this surgery last Tue and is now on 3 weeks hospitalization leave. 3 weeks? Yup. It isn’t too serious but in the doctor’s word, “the surgery can be quite complicated”, and, “it will be a painful healing process”. So here I am, stuck at home with no where I can go. Not that I have got nothing to do, I have promised to my colleagues and customers that I will remain contactable, so that means I will have to work from home. But I notice that I keep needing to take breaks in between work or I will go all gorgy.

Oh, having said that, I did tried to venture out for the 1st time in 8 days. To pick up the mails in the letterbox. My wife hates to retrieve the mails so I thought since I am feeling better today, I should go clear my letterbox before it is full, and oh boy, it was really full. It was a very short trip down and up, not too bad a feeling, but I do feel weird with the way I walk. So I don’t think I am going anywhere else soon.

Staying at home also means getting the occassional knock on the doors with salesperson peddling items from ice-cream to ‘bah hu ??’. All with the same tatic – emotional blackmail.

Just the other day, 2 teens came knocking on the door selling ice-cream. They told me that they are selling ice-cream because their grandma is sick and they needed the money to buy food and medicine. Haven’t heard that before. But I told them I do not allow my kids to eat ice-cream (at least not often), so I do not want a whole box of ice-cream sitting in my freezer. And they started with their predictable, “please…please…please”. OK, I am not about to judge here, but their stories do present some loopholes, and their eye-contact with each other sort of gave it away.

They were not about to gave up, and persisted on, so I asked them how much is it. They told me their cost is $10 and they are selling $12. Not about to spend $12 on something I do not want, I decided to ‘trust’ their story (there is no way I can verify anyway) and told them since their profit is $2, I will give them the $2 and they can sell the ice-cream to someone else. Only then they relented and walk away. Some can say I am a easy fool, but I guess for $2 I save myself the guilt that the story ‘might’ be true, and if I am really made a fool, $2 is still something I can bear with.

Today, an auntie (more of ah ma) came knocking again, peddling some unknown source of ‘lah chang ??’, ‘bah hu ??’ and other things (in clear plastic packing). She claim to be stay at opposite block and it’s tough of her to be walking floor by floor selling these items, and keep saying to me, “?????????”, which means “please help, please help”. I told her we don’t cook so prefer not to buy, and she immediately stuff me the ’bah hu ??’ and tell me “this one no need to cook”. I thought if it is cheap maybe I will just help her out a bit and asked her how much and was told $15.

Now, I’m not sure if that is the market price but I tought it sounded expensive, and anyway, having been at home for the last 8 days, I only have $5 cash with me. So I told her that I do not have enough cash with me. She then try to give me a solution and ask me to just buy one pack and top up the rest with coins. I told her all I have is $5 and she immediately turn a black face and walk away. That certainly didn’t make my day to be shown a black face.

I hope no one else come to knock on my house, or I will not be stupid enough to open the door anymore.

Earth Hour

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

28 Mar 2009 – 2030hrs to 2130hrs…time to switch off those lights…and we did.

My elder son Denver was very excited about the Earth Hour event and keep reminding us about it. I guess he must have heard it in school and is very eager to participant. On the day itself, he keep counting down to the time and when 8.30pm finally came, he went round the house switching off all the lights and appliances.

Critics might say that this is all a commercial gimmicks but I do feel the Earth Hour does bring a level of awareness to a lot of people on the importance to protect our planet. Many might not even entertain the thoughts of protecting our planet, as they feel they may not live that long, and many might still feel that way, but it is important to focus on the additional number of people who will become aware as a result of this event rather that on those who don’t care.

But some do becomes a little too enthusiastic about it. For example, a family near my neighbour who obviously is a supporter of the environment, switched off their lights and went downstairs for a walk, it was all good, except when they allow their kids to scream at the top of their voice for others to switch off their lights. I feel this might give a negative effect to it as some might be irritated by the action.

Back to my son, we found ourselves talking about the planet and how we can do to help, and I think it’s a very good time of education to our future generations, who hopefully, will not be as wasteful and harmful to the environment as our generation.

Message from the heart

Friday, February 27th, 2009

I recently started a new…hmm…what you call…a new….err….a new way of adding spices in our life at home, if I can say that.

It all started when I chance upon this fluorescent marker that is good to write on glass/mirror surface. So I started leaving messages to my spouse at the shower glass, the window, the mirror, and our wardrobe. My wife found the pen I hidden and started to reply and leave return messages.

What I realise at the end of all this seemingly ‘kiddish’ behaviour is that it actually brought us closer, as it add little surprises which is always good for the marriage life.

On top of that, my son started to get in the act and wrote some heartwarming sentences. And I think we want to keep it going so I bought the entire range of colours available.

Just this morning, I left a message for Denver, my elder son, on his breakfast table. I wrote this yesterday night after a struggle to make him sleep, which some unbelievable behaviour. But I do not want it to end like that, so I wrote a little note and this morning when he sits now for his breakfast, a smile broke out.

Such positive messages I believe will go a long way in strengthening our family bonding and relationship. Cheers!

Forgetting the past…looking to the (not so bright) future…

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

Wow…it has taken me almost 3 months to write again. It’s not that I have lost interest in writing, but many things have overwhelm me so much so that I just couldn’t continue writing…till now.

So many things have happen in these 3 months that it will take many pages to fill. But I’ve decided to forget the past and look to the future in today’s post.

The economy crisis has been in the mind of most people nowadays and it is certainly on mine, especially with the crisis not likely to let up anytime soon. So I guess I have to relook into my lifestyle and make the necessary adjustment to it. But many times it is easier said than done.

With most part of our lifestyle committed before the crisis starts, things like our children’s education, our car, our house, contracts we’ve signed, installment we’ve taken up, etc…is not something we are at a liberty to change as we deem fit.

So what to do? Will have to bite the bullet and try and pull through, and make small adjustments along the way whenever circumstances allow.

While all these are going on, I have a trip to look forward in June. Something that was postponed from last Dec. Managed to claim 4 free tickets to Bali but now have to worry about the expenses when we are there. If we gave up the tickets, it will be such a waste, and if we go ahead, we have to worry about the amount we spend, what an irony!

New Jap Foodcourt @ Northpoint

Thursday, December 4th, 2008

Having saw on the SoShiok.com about the new Japanese Food Court that just opened at the new extension in Northpoint (Level 3), my family and I decided to pay them a visit yesterday. We felt it was a daring idea to open such style food court in the heartland so we went to check it out.

The setup was pretty impressive, wooden table that are clean (maybe because it’s new) with wooden stool (no back rest for you). There are about 10 stalls in all, I try to recall all that I remember, ranging from grill meat on a stick (Yaki style) with rice, rice burger, omelette rice, donburi, bento set, sushi, pizza & pasta, ramen and curry rice. OK, I only remember 9, maybe there are only 9, or maybe I forgotten some, so go check it out and tell me.

My wife tried the beef rice ($6.90) serve on a hot stone bowl, while I tried from the same store eating the chicken rice with egg set ($4.90). It was too bad, the hot stone bowl keep the food hot but right at the end some of the rice and meat are burnt, so don’t take too long to finish it. Portion feels a bit less though. My son tried the salmon omelette rice and he absolutely love it…finishing every last bit, and he has already planned what to eat the next time he is here.

The only problem I have is that the renovations are not complete, getting from the carpark out is a big problem, and I think the carparks will not be enough support the expected surge in crowd. But overall, the new Northpoint means a lot more shops to shop and a lot more eateries to eat (the Hong Kong eatery has such long queue!!!). So all is good, once the renovation is fully complete.
